Can You Spot the Bluff in poker?
Poker is one of the rare opportunities in life when you are actually expected to lie, more specifically, lie about the strength of your poker hand. Maintaining solid composure and stoic facial expressions guise your emotions so that your poker opponents do not have a clue as to how strong your hand is. Another strategy is to be unpredictable in your behavior. For instance, when you have bad hands you smirk intentionally with the purpose of fooling other poker opponents into believing you let your guard down and expressed your pleasure for your good hand. Keeping that in mind, it is ultimately up to you, the poker player, to make an informed judgment on whether or not another poker player is simply bluffing or has an incredible hand of cards.
In general, shaky, unsteady hands and persistently reaching for a beverage are strong indications of nervousness. Conversely, these nuances can also demonstrate that a poker player is bluffing and trying to trick you to believe that he is nervous when he is actually not. More often than not, if a poker player is trying to intimidate you by staring at you, he is bluffing. Any poker player raising his hand to his mouth is trying to hide a smirk, most likely from holding a hand of cards. Although these are some of the most common poker tells, there are also more subtle and less widespread signs that someone is bluffing at poker. Keep your eyes and ears open.
