Fixed-line Faces Stiff Competition from Mobile Broadband
Broadband users in Sweden have doubled their mobile broadband usage during 2008, reaching almost the same level as fixed-line broadband usage. A senior partner at Rewheel, a telecoms consultancy in Helsinki, said that mobile broadband has proved that it is ready to overtake the fixed broadband industry.
According to a report by the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency, the shift to mobile broadband by many users has led to an increase in the online traffic on Swedish networks to almost four times in the last one year. The monthly data usage has gone up significantly as well due to the advent of mobile broadband technology.
All this suggests that mobile broadband has a promising future ahead, but there are some things that are yet to be sorted out. There might be some losses in store for some fixed-line service providers, as the increased competition will mean that mobile operators will go overboard to grab more market space.
Mobile broadband services are growing at a very fast pace, but industry experts believe that for it to have an impact and gain a wider base, the operators will have to re-think the price that they have set for their services.
