Straight Draw

Straight draw are always situations where novice players, and even experienced online poker players at times, can end up losing a lot of money. They look down at their cards again, look at the flop and see an open ended straight draw and visions of piles of chips dance in their heads.

As any poker startegy book will tell you, and in greater detail, you should only chase straight draws if you have favorable pot odds, that is the ratio of the size of the pot compared to what it costs you to call. So if there’s a pot of $100, and for some reason someone only bets $10, it’s favorable odds for you to call and try and hit your straight draw.

In Omaha it’s a bit different. Since the extra two hole cards make for a greater chance of poker online players hitting big hands, often a straight will not win a pot for you. And more than that, you have to worry about someone hitting a higher straight than you. It’s always a sucker’s proposition to chase the low end of the straight, but even more so in Omaha. You’ll often be wise to throw away a straight draw and concentrate on the next hand.
